Transformers Review:  Masterpiece Smokescreen

When taking Smokescreen's character into account you would think he would be more of a Decepticon than an Autobot, he's a gambler and a cheat, he tends to be willing to do what it takes to ensure the higher ground.
But he is an Autobot in every sense of the word, he has no love for the Decepticons and he is willing to do what is needed to fight back against them.  Perhaps he is using a smokescreen of his own to mask any deeper problems.

Generation One Smokescreen was the first Transformer I ever had back in the 1980s, when the Masterpiece version was announced last year I knew that he was a must buy for me.  And I'm glad I bought him.

Alt Mode:

Much like Prowl and Bluestreak, Smokescreen's alt mode is a Nissan Fairlady 280Z-T, although some information notes him as a 280Z-R, maybe to indicate the design differences.
Smokescreen is a retooling and repainting of the previous two, there is also a slight change to the transformation.

In car mode, Smokescreen's retooling is very easy to see, the front hood has been designed with a larger spoiler, racing stock I believe, and a back wing, also racing stock I believe.
His colours are red on the top, white in the middle and blue on the lower half with white on the front hood and on the remoulded spoiler.

On the sides are sponsors like 'Slotfever' and 'Devcon Oil.  Both of these are nods at one particular episode he was in.  On the upper part of the windscreen and the back left and right of the alt mode are the words 'Smoke Tactics' which is another way of saying Smokescreen.
On the lower part of the spoiler are the sponsors of 'Huck' and 'Disturbance'
Also on the sides are the numbers '38', racing numbers by the looks of it.

The tail lights have also been remade and now cover the back part of the car mode.  All of these details look stunning in this mode and fairly make him stand out.

The wipers from Prowl and Bluestreak are also not added with Smokescreen, the back wipers are replaced with the tail fin and the windscreen wipers have been replaced with small holes for his shoulder cannons to slot in for vehicle mode to give him an attack mode, his rifle can also be attached in the same manner as Bluestreak's can.
There is an Autobot symbol above the Nissan symbol much like with Prowl and Bluestreak.

Smokescreen looks amazing in this mode to the new colours and retooling, he looks every bit the race car.  The colours stand out very well and are pretty much why he's still fondly remembered by fans to this day.
He really is quite stunning.

Robot Mode:

His transformation is almost exactly like that of Prowl and Bluestreak, the only difference is in the arms where the front wheels are on top of the arms this time instead of to the back of the arms, this change means the arms are transformed a tiny big differently.
Also since he doesn't come with the shoulder cannons that Prowl and Bluestreak did, then when attaching the shoulder cannons he does come with you have to attach them.  It isn't hard to do though.

In this mode Smokescreen looks quite different due to the retooled spoiler and head, his head is very comic and cartoon accurate.  The colours again are just as stroking as in vehicle mode, colours additions are a bright silver on the legs and his hands, elbow joints and upper soldiers are a dark blue.

His rifle is also a retooling of the one that comes with Prowl and Bluestreak and looks comic and cartoon accurate, although it doesn't seem to sit too way when held in his hands, maybe a slight flaw in the retooling.

Smokescreen has the same articulation as Prowl and Bluestreak, other than the retooling and new colours he is very much the same in every other regard and he looks very distinctive due to the difference while looking every bit as beautiful.

He looks very cartoon and comic accurate.

Smokescreen, like Prowl and Bluestreak, is worthy of being called a Masterpiece.  He is beautifully retooled and beautifully repainted, his differences stand in contrast while adding to the others and he belongs in anyone's collection.
It's a shame that his rifle doesn't seem to want to stay in his hands though in bot mode.

I can't say which of the three I like the most, I like each of them equally and highly recommend them to any Transformers collector.  They are true Masterpieces in every sense of the word, even with their small flaws they are so well made.

Pick them up if you can, they are worth every penny.
A small review of Masterpiece Smokescreen

His colours and retooling are very distinctive, he's quite stunning
